Limonene is the second most prevalent terpene in nature and is responsible for a citrus fragrance in plants. Limonene is now most popular for its usage in citrus cleaners, but has historically been used to treat gastric reflux, anxiety and toenail fungus. Limonene extracts are most popularly derived from the peels of oranges and similar citrus fruits.

The anti-inflammatory effects that limonene plants provide is a great reason to aid more fruits to your diet. Some researchers believe limonene can provide valuable protection for chemotherapy patients and studies have showcase limonene’s anticancer properties.

The Brain Research Journal published a study that boldly stated, "the properties of (+)-limonene epoxide should be more thoroughly examined in order to achieve newer tools for management and/or treatment of central nervous system diseases and anxiolytic-like effects. The LD50 obtained for the acute toxicity studies using intraperitoneal route of administration was 4.0 g/kg. These findings suggest that acute administration of the (+)-limonene epoxide exerts an anxiolytic-like effect on mice, and it could serve as a new approach for the treatment anxiety, since it practically does not produce toxic effects."
